Backyard Style: Trends We Love

In honor of the first day of summer, we're talking about backyard trends we love.  And after a harsh midwest winter, we’re convinced that there isn’t anything better than spending time with friends and family in a charming backyard setting. And today’s design trends are giving homeowners the chance to extend their personal style and space outside. Whether you’re dreaming of hosting big backyard parties or creating a private and peaceful escape, here are a few backyard trends that we can’t stop thinking about...

Fire pits
Fire pits are becoming increasingly popular in backyards of all shapes and sizes. They can be small and portable or a custom built-in backyard structure. Stone, brick, metal… whatever your style is, we guarantee that a fire pit will result in late night conversations, s’mores, and sweet memories with your friends and family.

Built-in grill
It’s pretty common to grill out in the backyard, but if you want to take your backyard style to the next level, a built-in grill and smoker will do just that. Warning: you may never want to cook another meal indoors. And if you love to host, this is a backyard feature we cannot recommend enough. It’s practical and eye catching. Also, anything that results in delicious food gets our vote.

Outdoor dining
Because we live in Chicagoland and the season for eating outdoors is brief, it feels extra special. Call us crazy, but we think that food actually tastes better when you get to enjoy it outside. However, to ensure maximum enjoyment, we recommend big tables with comfortable chairs and durable cushions. Outdoor furniture has never been more creative or comfortable, so it’s the perfect time to create a designated space for summertime meals and conversations.

Lighting
Now that LED and low-voltage lights are more popular, there are endless options for adding your own lighting to any backyard space. If you’re on a tight budget or feel like your installation skills are limited, consider string lights, tiki torches, or lanterns. Find a way to give your backyard a gorgeous glow this summer and you may just find yourself staying outside well past your bedtime.

Container garden
Maybe your backyard isn’t big enough for a large garden, or perhaps you feel like you have a black thumb. No worries! You too can enjoy a backyard space with fresh flowers or veggies. Container gardens are simple, easy to maintain, and super stylish! Pick out a few adorable pots and plant away! Group the pots together or spread them out around your backyard space. We recommend growing something that you don’t normally see here in northern Illinois like a lemon or orange tree! Nothing will brighten up a backyard space like fresh citrus!

Hardscapes
We love a good patio. Pairing a hardscape with lush landscaping will result in a beautiful, comfortable, and professionally planned look. The best part is that there is plenty of room for creativity! Consider retaining walls, winding pathways, or paver patios. It’s the perfect way to turn your backyard into a dreamy space that is sure to become your go-to destination.
